Detroit Police Investigating Fatal Shooting At Chalmers Community Hall

DETROIT (WWJ) -- The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is mulling over charges in a shooting at a community center on Sunday that left one man dead and five other injured.

A 44-year-old man was killed and another five people were shot at the Chalmers Community Hall near E. Outer Dr. early Sunday morning. The shootings happened just after 4 a.m. according to police, after a confrontation turned deadly during a party.

Police Chief James Craig said Monday that investigators don't know what sparked the shooting, but that officers have found suspects who they believe were involved in the incident.

"As tragic as it is, our officers -- within two hours of the incident -- made three arrests," Craig said. "So we have three individuals in custody, and the suspects I can only describe right now as 24-year-old, 25-year-old African-American males."

A fourth suspect has been arrested for an unrelated crime. Craig says the suspects appear to have been on a 24-hour crime spree and the hall is no stranger to shootings and assaults.

"We do understand that at this location -- historically -- there have been other criminal events which we're investigating," Craig said. "So we're looking at having a conversation with the owner."

All of the injured have been released from the hospital. Investigators believe that the attack was random.
