Detroit Police Interrupt Shootout; Suspects Get Away

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are searching for at least two men who were apparently involved in a gun battle in northern Detroit.

The situation unfolded around 1:15 a.m. Thursday when plain clothes officers were checking for criminal activity in the area of E. 8 Mile Road near the I-75 service drive -- the scene of a previous fatal shooting.

While checking the area, the officers came upon a shootout in progress.  The suspects, described as black males, then immediately fled on foot.

Police tell WWJ that the suspects did not fire any shots at the officers, who were uninjured. Police added that the officers did not fire their weapons.

Other circumstances, including what might have led to the gun battle, weren't immediately clear.

Police say the incident remains under investigation.
