Detroit Police Cruiser Involved In 4-Car Pileup In Front Of Station
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit police officer is back on the job just moments after his cruiser was involved in a multi-vehicle accident right in front of a station.
The accident happened Thursday morning near the DPD central district building on Woodward Avenue and West Grand Boulevard.
Sgt. Michael Woody said three vehicles heading southbound on Woodward were involved in an accident, and one of those cars ricocheted and hit the police cruiser.
WWJ's Bill Szumanski described the scene while flying overhead in Chopper 950.
"Right in front of the police department is where this accident scene happened. In the middle of the intersection, there's four vehicles involved in this wreck -- one of them is a Detroit Police Department squad car. We do understand that officer is OK," Szumanski said. "There's three other vehicles involved, including an SUV that's up on the sidewalk, and we watched them take that driver out, put them on a stretcher and take them away."
Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said all four vehicles sustained extensive damage. Injuries were reported, although it wasn't immediately clear how many people were hurt. The officer involved in the accident was able to walk away, unharmed.
The crash remains under investigation.
