Detroit People Mover Resumes Operations After Maintenance
DETROIT (AP) — An elevated rail service in downtown Detroit is back in operation following track work and other construction.
The city says the Detroit People Mover will begin carrying passengers Friday -- three days earlier than expected.
Detroit Transportation Corp. General Manager Barbara Hansen says it was necessary to perform rail and switch replacement, but also important to restart operations as soon as possible for patrons.
Officials have said the rail replacement was necessary as a result of wear on the track that's typically seen in rail systems.
Friday kicks off a busy weekend downtown that includes an annual riverfront festival and the Detroit Tigers hosting the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park. A popular fireworks display that attracts thousands of people to the downtown area is scheduled Monday night.
