Detroit People Mover Reopens After Winter Weather Shutdown
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit People Mover will be open for transportation Wednesday after being shut down due to extreme winter weather.
Officials said it's back to business as usual, with riders able to board at any of the 13 heated stations after record low temperatures on Tuesday forced the People Mover's closure.
As many as 700 people use the People Mover every morning -- up from about 300 just one year ago. Spokesperson Ericka Alexander said the increase in riders is due to an increase in companies moving to downtown Detroit.
"We call our self the ultimate parking ride because you park once and you'll be able to go to several destinations, all your meetings and place of business as well as after work, going to dinner and special events," she said.
The temperature in Detroit on Tuesday never broke even, with highs reported around negative 2 degrees. There was also a blistering wind chill that made actual temperatures feel more around 15 to 25 degrees below zero.
The arctic blast is easing its grip on Michigan, but bitterly cold temperatures are expected throughout Wednesday. Forecasters say the high will be around 15 degrees, but a wind chill will make it feel slightly colder.
