Detroit Officials Say Car Crash, Building Collapse Won't Be Cleared For Weeks
DETROIT (WWJ) - Days after a car crashed into a west side Detroit building, the vehicle is still there -- buried underneath debris and bricks that are scattered across the sidewalk and street.
The accident happened earlier this week at the corner of Linwood Avenue and Gladstone Street, in a neighborhood near Rosa Parks and Chicago boulevards.
A man apparently lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the building, causing its roof and front façade to come crashing down. Firefighters rushed to the scene and were able to rescue the man from his mangled car.
Miraculously, the driver only suffered minor injuries. His car on the other hand -- now that's another story.
Under a pile of rubble, the silver-blue sedan is barely recognizable. It has been completely demolished by the building that crashed on top of it.
City workers know about the car and have even erected barricades with caution tape around the building. But officials say it's just too dangerous to remove the vehicle or tear the building down. One official said if they pull the car out, the building could collapse even further.
The building has been placed on the city's demolition list, but officials say it could be at least a month before the mess is completely cleaned up.
