Detroit Neighborhood Gets New Historically Styled Lights
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit's Sherwood Forest neighborhood is getting new historically styled street lights as part of efforts to improve the city's lighting system.
The Public Lighting Authority of Detroit is formally completing installation of the 96 street lights during a community ceremony on Wednesday. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and officials with the Public Lighting Authority plan to turn on the lights.
The lights were installed in the northwest Detroit neighborhood under an agreement with the Sherwood Forest Association, which provided additional funds needed to cover the difference in cost versus the standard light poles being installed in other parts of the city.
The poles were chosen by the association. The agreement was reached under a Public Lighting Authority program that allows neighborhoods to help fund more-expensive poles.
The Public Lighting Authority, which was authorized by the Michigan Legislature in 2012 and approved by Detroit City Council in 2013, is replacing lights throughout the city. Fewer than half of the city's 88,000 streetlights were believed to be working before the efforts began.
