Detroit Man Charged With Drunk Driving In Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 36-year-old Detroit man was allegedly drunk when he fatally struck a woman crossing the street and then fled the scene of the accident.

George McCree is now being held responsible in the death of 48-year-old Lawanna Durrett. He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol causing death, driving with a suspended license causing death, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death.

The accident happened around 5:45 p.m. Sunday on eastbound 7 Mile Road near Runyon. Police say Durrett was walking across 7 Mile Road when she was struck by a vehicle that continued driving after the collision.

Further investigation led to the identification and arrest of McCree, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, according to police.

McCree is being held on a$25,000 bond ahead of a probable cause hearing on Nov. 17 and preliminary exam on Nov. 24.
