DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 48-year-old Detroit man has been charged in the stabbing death of a woman near the city's Eastern Market area.

Alphonso Jordan was arraigned Thursday on a charge of first-degree premeditated murder. He was remanded to jail and is due back in court for a preliminary examination on May 27.

The charge stems from an incident that occurred during the early morning hours last Tuesday. Police responded to the area after receiving a report about a woman laying in front of a building on Alfred Street near Orleans Street, just east of the main market area.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the body of 49-year-old Dawn Marie Ferguson. She was stabbed multiple times.

According to reports, Jordan was located and arrested at a nearby homeless shelter shortly after the stabbing.

Other circumstances surrounding the incident, including a motive, were not immediately released.
