Detroit Man Armed With Knife Shot By Police Making Welfare Check

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 61-year-old Detroit man is hospitalized in critical condition, shot by two police officers as he allegedly threatened a firefighter with a knife.

It happened Wednesday afternoon when police officers were making a welfare check at a home in the area of the Lodge Freeway and Chicago in Detroit.

Officials said the officers requested help from a Detroit firefighter to gain access to the home. Once inside, police said, the man ran toward the firefighter, armed with a knife — and the two officers opened fire, hitting the man at least twice.

Family members said the man had a history of mental illness. His name was not released.

An investigation is ongoing.
