Detroit Deputy Mayor Ike McKinnon Retiring, Plans To Return To Teaching
DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Deputy Mayor Ike McKinnon plans to retire following decades of public service that included time as the city's police chief.
The mayor's office says Wednesday the 72-year-old's retirement is effective July 1 and he plans to return to teaching at University of Detroit Mercy.
McKinnon was tapped in 2013 to head Mayor Mike Duggan's transition team because of his extensive experience in city government. In a statement, McKinnon says he's "proud to have been part of our city's turnaround" and wants to continue helping the city.
McKinnon joined the Detroit Police Department in 1965 and rose through the ranks before leaving in 1984 to become a professor. He later served as director of security and fire protection for the Renaissance Center before becoming Detroit's police chief from 1994-1998.
