Detroit Could Get $21 Million More From US To Demolish Vacant Houses
DETROIT (AP) - More than $21 million in federal funds could be funneled to Detroit to allow the city to continue demolishing vacant houses.
The money is part of nearly $33 million awarded in 2010 to the state from the federal "Hardest Hit" fund.
The funding recommendation for Detroit is expected to go Wednesday before Michigan's Housing Development Authority.
The Detroit News reports that Mayor Mike Duggan has said demolitions were funded through the end of the year.
A blight task force survey determined there were more than 40,000 vacant houses in Detroit. Duggan's administration has demolished more than 6,000. The city is averaging about 100 demolitions each week.
The state said in December that Detroit was getting $50 million of more than $75 million in "Hardest Hit" funds steered to Michigan cities.
