Detroit Cop Charged With Firing Gun During Fight With Woman, Leaving Her Battered
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) After allegedly firing his gun and assaulting a female companion to the point she leapt out a window, a Detroit police officer was charged with assault.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges Wednesday against Officer Johnny Ray Bridges, 47, in connection with the assault of a 31- year-old woman at a home in Detroit.
Worthy said at about 1:45 a.m. march 3 Bridges was off-duty when he and the victim had an argument while both were drinking alcohol.
"At some point during the argument Bridges fired a handgun into the air," Worthy said in a press release, adding, "Bridges assaulted the victim by punching and kicking her face and body."
Wearing only a T-shirt in sub-zero temperatures, the victim escaped by breaking out the front window and running away. She ran to a nearby restaurant where the employees immediately assisted her by providing clothing and calling 911.
The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is in stable condition, police said.
After an investigation by the Detroit police, Bridges was arrested on the same day. He has been charged with: unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, domestic violence and reckless discharge of a firearm.
