Detroit-Area Theater Chain To Play New 'Star Wars' Film For 30 Hours Straight

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - If the Force was with you, you may already have your tickets to the much-anticipated opening weekend of the Star Wars Episode VII.

"The Force Awakens" hits theaters at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17 and some hardcore fans are making plans to see it more than once.

With the hype in mind, Phoenix Theatres says it'll be the only Midwest-area movie theater chain that will be playing the movie non-stop for over 30 straight hours.

"It was actually the employees who came to us, so excited about this film that they wanted to run all night with it," said Phoenix Theatres President Cory Jacobson, in a news release. "Our group of people are really excited about Star Wars, and for the 'Cause of the Force' they wanted to do this."

The marathon will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17 and continue straight through the night, into the early morning hours and then into the normal rotation of showtimes on Friday.

Phoenix Theatres operates 10 screens at Laurel Park Place in Livonia, 8 screens at the Mall of Monroe in Monroe and 4 at State-Wayne Theater in Wayne.

According to reports, demand for tickets for the film is so crazy high that — as tickets went on sale Monday night—  fans flocking to Fandango managed to crash the website, as well as MovieTickets.com, for a brief time.
