Detroit Airport Drill Planned Today As Delta Pilots Protest

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) You can expect lots lots of commotion around Detroit City Airport starting at 9 this morning as they hold an emergency drill for response teams from many different agencies.

First responders will practice for real-life disasters such as fires, spills of hazardous materials and chemicals and other life-threatening situations.  City officials say residents need not be worried if they see a lot of activity in and around the area of Connor and Gratiot.

It's set to start at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile at the other airport in metro Detroit, expect to see a different kind of activity.

The pilot's union says Delta made one and a half billion dollars in the first quarter of 2016 and they want their piece of the pie, so a picket is expected today at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus.

A new agreement with the union has yet to be approved after 15 months of negotiations, while all other employees of Delta's, including shareholders and investors, benefiting from the company's success, according to union officials.

Pilots are also planning pickets in Minneapolis, New York, Cincinnati and Los Angeles.
