Detroit's air quality among worst in world as Canadian wildfires persist

(CBS DETROIT) - Detroit's air quality is among the worst in the world right now due to smoke from the wildfires in Canada and elevated ozone levels. 

This is the second time this month that Detroit has ranked in the top ten for cities with the worst air quality.

According to the IQAir Air Quality Index, as of 8:32 a.m. Friday, Detroit ranked as the third worst city in the world for air quality. 

Washington, D.C.,is also among the worst right now, ranking at No. 4, along with New York City, ranking at No. 6. 

According to NEXT Weather meteorologist Kylee Miller, the smoke is expected to diminish by the weekend slowly, but she says it will still be hazy at times through the weekend.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy says an Air Quality Action Day has been issued as some areas are in unhealthy ranges for poor air quality. The Air Quality Alerts are extended and will now expire at midnight Sunday. 

All individuals should limit time spent outdoors, especially anyone with asthma or respiratory diseases, children and individuals with compromised immune systems
