DDOT Bus Collides With Custom Hot Rod On Detroit's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit Department of Transportation bus has been involved in a serious accident with another vehicle on the city's east side.

The vehicles collided Wednesday morning at Chalmers and Mack Avenue and ended up in the Valero gas station parking lot nearby. The car, a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass, was pinned between the bus and a gas pump.

"One vehicle is rolled over and a city bus is pretty much attached to that vehicle as well," WWJ Traffic Reporter Bill Szumanski reported from above the scene in Chopper 950.

Both the bus driver are the car driver sustained injuries and were taken to a local hospital; their current conditions are unknown. Four passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident, but none were hurt.

Charles Jones lives across the street from the crash site.

"I just heard a big boom and it sounded like a bomb went off," Jones told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "It's hard to believe somebody survived that, you know? That used to be a car."

Jude Fenderson was also close enough to see all the action.

"The guy in the red car was rushing, trying to make the light and at the same time, the bus was coming," he said. "The light was turning green and they both met here."

Detroit police and EMS are on the scene. The intersection remains closed as police continue their investigation.
