CLINTON TOWNSHIP (CBS Detroit) - It was a festive atmosphere outside of local retailers Friday morning as customers braved the near freezing Temperatures to stand in line and be among the first to get an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus.

At the Mall at Partridge Creek, iPhone fanatics lined up at midnight and dressed in layers – and wrapped themselves in blankets - to be the first to get their hands on the larger iPhones.

"Gotta get the six plus," said Krysty Kinsman, of Sterling Heights, who was layered in a couple of sweat shirts and wrapped in blanket to keep warm as she waited eight hours in line for the doors to the Apple Store to open. "Its bigger, there is more screen room for online shopping and text messaging."

Across Metro Detroit shoppers lined up to purchase the next generation of iPhones. According to Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager for the Great Lakes region for AT&T, the response was "extraordinary" and possibly "one of the most successful ever" launches for Apple.

"Every time Apple launches a new phone, there is a tremendous amount of pent-up demand and excitement," Ducharme said. "This by far has been one of the most successful, I think largely due to the new features of the phone."

Some of the new features include:

  • Two sizes for the phone with the iPhone 6 at 4.7- and iPhone 6 Plus which is 5.5-inch screens,
  • Prices which start at $199 for the 16GB iPhone6, and $399 for a 128GB version. The iPhone 6 Plus ranges from $299 for the 16 GB to $499 for 128GB,
  • Both models have increased screen resolution, and enhanced features when the phones are in horizontal mode,
  • The glass curves around the edges of the phone.
The camera and video features with enhanced blink and smile detection, image stabilization, and slow motion feature,
  • A faster A8 processor,
  • Longer battery life.

A number of retailers, including AT&T, Best Buy and Verizon, has special offers on the new iPhone and trade-ins of older model iPhones toward the new smart phone.
