Crews Search Lake Erie After Boater Reported Missing

ERIE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Crews are searching western Lake Erie for boater who was reported missing after heading out on the water a day earlier.

Michigan authorities say 35-year-old Brenton Burton, of Toledo, Ohio, launched a 14-foot boat off Halfway Creek in Monroe County's Erie Township on Monday morning and told relatives he was heading to Turtle Island. He hasn't been heard from since.

The Coast Guard says a boat matching the description of the one he was using was found overturned Tuesday morning near Turtle Island.

Erie Township police Chief Dean Ansel tells the Monroe News that the man's brother and girlfriend reported him missing. The Blade of Toledo reports the search Tuesday, which includes boats and a helicopter, is focused on the area near Halfway Creek.
