Crews Respond To Fire At MGM Grand Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Crews responded to a kitchen fire at the MGM Grand Casino in downtown Detroit on Thursday evening.

The Detroit Fire Department said crews arrived at the casino on 3rd Ave. just south of I-75 and found a fire in the Wolfgang Puck Steakhouse at around 7:30 p.m. The fire was confined to a broiler and ductwork, and the installed fire suppression system operated normally.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell told WWJ that even though the sprinkler system worked properly, firefighters still had to go up on the roof of the building.

"Our people came in and they traced the fire up the ductwork to the roof and made sure the fire didn't extend out of it," Fornell said. "So it was a win-win for everybody. Damage was minimized -- stuff like this happens every once and a while."

There were no reports of any injuries. People were seen going into and out of the casino even as fire crews remained on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
