Two dead after fiery crash involving two vehicles along I-96 in Novi
Two people are dead in the aftermath of a fiery crash on Interstate 96 in Novi, an accident scene that snarled traffic in Oakland County for several hours.
Novi Police Department, which is investigating the crash, said Neena Wang, 30, of California, was driving an Acura when she pulled over to the side of the road for what appears to be a tire or mechanical problem. Her vehicle was then struck by a Kia Sol driven by Sylvette Campbell, 57, of Westland, who was unable to stop in time.
Both vehicles burst into flames. Neither driver was able to get out of the wreckage, and both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
All eastbound lanes of I-96 were blocked starting at Beck Road / Exit 160 after the 2:15 a.m. crash. Vehicles could re-enter eastbound I-96 at Novi Road / Exit 162, the Michigan Department of Transportation reported. The highway reopened shortly before 9 a.m.
An additional accident also took place about 7:15 a.m. on eastbound I-96, ahead of that crash near Milford Road.
In the meantime, drivers had to contend with fog as Oakland County was included in a dense fog advisory issued at 3:40 a.m. and lasting until 9 a.m. Visibility was down to a quarter-mile in some areas of Southeast Michigan, according to the National Weather Service in Detroit.
"Make sure you slow down and really increase your following distance," the Michigan State Police, Second District, said about the crash and foggy conditions.
