Crash on Interstate 96 leads to rush hour traffic snarls in Livonia area

LIVONIA, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Motorists are facing delays for Friday morning's rush hour in the aftermath of a crash on Interstate 96 near Interstate 275. 

The Michigan Department of Transportation reported there was an accident shortly before 5:45 a.m. on eastbound I-96 (Jeffries Freeway) between I-275/M14 and Newburgh Road/Exit 173. 

All lanes of I-96 in that area are closed, including the I-275 northbound and southbound ramps to eastbound I-96. At 7:30 a.m., MDOT maps still showed that freeway area as closed. Traffic on M-14 eastbound has been diverted to Sheldon Road.

"You will want to find another route this morning as traffic will be slow in the area," Michigan State Police, Metro Detroit post reported on social media. 

The Livonia Police Department is investigating the crash.
