Crash Kills Man, 10-Year-Old Girl, Leaves Twin Sister In Critical Condition

DETROIT (WWJ) - A horrific accident just before midnight Sunday left two people dead, including a man and the daughter of the man's girlfriend.

Police say the 53-year-old driver and a 10-year-old twin girl were killed in the accident in the area of Glendale and Linwood on the city's west side and the twin sister left critically injured.

According to authorities, a Chevy Impala going eastbound on Linwood smashed into the back of a black Toyota, which was stopped at a light on Glendale -- killing the driver and the girl. The crash sent the Toyota into a utility pole -- and the Impala crossed over the center line and crashed into an coming car flipping it on its roof.

The driver and passengers in that vehicle suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the 30-year-driver of the Impala for reckless driving and driving while intoxicated -- he is in custody.

Parish Flowers lives in the neighborhood and saw the crash -- he says this accident is not a surprise:

"This ain't the first time this happened - it's not. Until something happens with the drivers and recognize that you can't be doing 70 in a 35-mile an hour zone - it ain't never going to stop.

"You knew someone was dead. Police had blocked off the area -- but you knew somebody was in real, real serious condition ... That's sad, it didn't have to be like that, but that's what happens when you speed."

The other twin daughter is reported to be in critical condition at Henry Ford Hospital.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
