Cops: $60K In Cash, Checks Stolen From Pontiac Water Department

PONTIAC (WWJ) - The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is trying to figure out who broke into a safe at the Pontiac Water Department, making off with more than $60,000.

Deputies received a call Wednesday morning about a possible burglary at the water department, located in the 500 block of South Opdyke Road near South Boulevard.

Employees told police they were arriving to work around 7:45 a.m. when they noticed a broken front window. Once inside, the employees said it appeared that several offices had been ransacked and that a large safe had been forced open.

Police said at least $30,000 in cash and $30,000 in checks that were being held overnight, pending a morning deposit, are missing from the safe. Police believe the theft took place sometime between 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and 7:45 a.m. Wednesday.

According to police, the building does not have an alarm or surveillance cameras, and security guards are only on the premises during normal business hours.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 248-858-5000.
