Contractor Impaled In Fall At Detroit Sewer Plant

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's water and sewer department says a contractor's employee was impaled on a steel rod when he fell while working at a sewage treatment plant on the city's southwest side.

Department spokesman Bill Johnson says the worker was hospitalized for injuries that don't appear to be life-threatening. Johnson says the accident happened about midday Tuesday.

According to Johnson, the rod penetrated the man's chest through the armpit but didn't exit his body. The spokesman says a contractor had failed to properly secure the rod.

Johnson says the injured man works for Collette Construction.
