Contract Worker Injured In Trench Collapse At Livingston County Jail

HOWELL (WWJ) - One man is hospitalized but is expected to be OK after a trench collapse at the Livingston County Jail in Howell.

It happened just before 10 a.m. Friday, according to Livingston County Sheriff's officials, as contract workers were installing a sanitary sewer line.

The six-foot-deep trench gave way, officials said, burying the 43-year-old Ionia County man up this his abdomen and trapping him.

The man was eventually pulled to safety by first responders and taken to the University of Michigan Hospital with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries. Officials says he's resident of Muir, Michigan and works for Sandborn Excavating. His name was not released.

The new sewer line was being installed as a part of the ongoing jail expansion and renovation project.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.
