Consumers Energy Reminds Homeowners To Check Before They Dig

JACKSON (WWJ) -- Before you start those fall construction projects, make sure you're following the right procedures.

Consumers Energy says their overall "Miss Dig" ticket requests for homeowner and construction projects are up 30,000 from last year. Aaron Kantor with Consumers Energy said that with a rise in projects, they're seeing an increase in damages and that he's reminding residents to call the hotline at least three days before the project.

"Our research shows that 30 percent of our damages are attributed to individuals not calling in to the 811," Kantor said. "So, anytime we can stress that message to reduce that number we obviously see that as a tremendous benefit."

The biggest increase in damages took place in Oakland, Wayne, Macomb and Genesee Counties.

"Whether you're a contractor working on a large road project or the do-it-yourselfer finishing up a home project, that you always call 811 at least three days before you dig so that you understand where you may have any underground facilities present at the job site," Kantor said.

As of August 2014, a total of 605 damages took place, up from a total of 478 during the same time in 2013.

"What we're seeing is obviously a significant increase and as a result of that type of increase there are more opportunities unfortunately where dig-in damages to underground facilities can occur," Kantor said.

Before you dig, make sure to contact the hotline at 811-MISS DIGG.

"Dialing those three digits is easy and it's proven to reduce potentially dangerous damages to underground utilities," Mary Palkovich, vice president of energy delivery for Consumers Energy said. "The safety of customers, employees and the public is our top priority. Unfortunately, we have seen an increase this year in the number of damages to underground facilities."
