Competency Exam Ordered For Mom Accused Of Killing Son, 2

DETROIT (AP) - A judge has ordered a mental competency exam for a 26-year-old Detroit woman accused of fatally choking her 2-year-old son.

Priyanka Chakraborty is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse in the death of her son Feb. 6. She faces life in prison without parole if convicted as charged.

On Wednesday, a judge referred her for an exam to see if she was criminally responsible and competent for trial. She's due back in court April 20.

Authorities say that Omraj Chakraborty was found unresponsive at home on the city's east side and taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
