Community Helps Woman In Need Whose Motorized Scooter Was Stolen

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) -- Here is some proof that there are good people in the world.

A sad story in Macomb County turned into a happy one after a thief stole a motorized scooter from an apartment complex in Mount Clemens. The scooter belonged to 62-year-old Kathy Ladd who has pulmonary hypertension and COPD and needs it to get around.

Ladd relies on the scooter to get around the Park Place complex for the elderly and one day when she was running errands, it was stolen. So, Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and Sheriff Tony Wickersham decided to help.

"Instantly, Tony and I reached out to the community and we were able to find people who were immediately willing to volunteer and donate," Smith said. "Like I said, this is from an attorney in Warren who didn't want his name given away, but, couldn't have been happier to join on in."

Ladd was ecstatic to receive the new red scooter, who said she felt violated when the old scooter was stolen.

"It's good to know people care," Lass said. "How could people be so cruel? But now, look at this -- it's just the opposite. So I'm very pleased. I thank God and I thank Macomb County and all of the people who have been so good to me."

The thief was captured on a surveillance camera, but hasn't been caught yet.
