Avengers Mentoring Youth Organization Further Improves Students Outside Classrooms

Southfield (CW50) - The Avengers Mentoring Youth Organization started 9 years ago when Edward Dean, CEO of the program, was the Parent President of his daughter's schools and worked in an after school program with students. One of the kid's asked Dean if there was a way they could do more outside of school to help themselves.

On this week's COMMUNITY CONNECT, Lisa Germani talks to Edward Dean about the Avengers Mentoring Youth Organization and how it grew from a question by a student.

Edward Dean founded the Avengers Mentoring Youth Organization to help student's further improve themselves outside of the class room. In January, the program starts its recruitment process for youth agents, ages 14-24. They then meet once a month for 3 hours to prep the youth agents on how to mentor/work with smaller children.

At the end of the summer, kids are taken to a summer camp where the youth agents get to work with the younger children and begin to mentor them.

This month, the program is accepting 50 youth mentors to join the program. There is no qualifications needed and no one will be turned away before the 50 person cutoff.

The child who gave Edward Dean the idea to start the program is now in college, but comes back every summer to help with the current youth at the summer camps.
