Come To Bookstock 2019, Support Literacy In Metro Detroit

Livonia, MI (CBS Detroit) - Bookstock Used Book & Media Sale is a community service project through which donations of books and media continue to provide enjoyment and knowledge. The entire process of collecting and sorting gently used books and media, organizing and staffing the sale is 100% volunteer driven. The proceeds from the sale support education and literacy projects in the Detroit metropolitan area and beyond.

"Here at Bookstock we are in our 17th year, and it's sort of the reincarnation of the old Brandeis University Women's' Alumni book sale," explains Neal Rubin, Detroit News and Honorary Chair of Bookstock. "A lot of people were familiar with that, so after a couple of years a bunch of volunteers in Oakland County said 'hey we always enjoyed that', so they decided to see if they could resurrect it and raise a bunch of money for literacy and education."

"It's funny, it's a high-tech era and everybody's got Kindle and an E-reader, we're up to over $2 million raised by Bookstock in our 17th year. And that's selling books, a lot of them $1 at a time, so clearly people want to hold books in their hands and to me, that's the beauty of it."

"We're getting books out of people's basements, and back in people's laps where they belong."  People tell us all the time there's just something different about holding a book and then they come out here and show us how passionate they really care about it."
