College Cancels Classes, Roads Closed After Man Shoots Self

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A Grand Rapids college cancelled classes and some downtown streets were closed after a man fatally shot himself and left a suspicious package that turned out to be harmless.

Authorities say the 26-year-old man shot himself in the head late Wednesday afternoon outside Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. Police say he left a package and a note indicated that it was intended for police, though investigators found nothing threatening.

The hospital stayed open and patients remained inside because they were deemed safe. Officials at nearby Grand Rapids Community College instructed students on the premises to remain in place for a few hours and cancelled evening classes.

Police say they believe the man parked in the college's parking ramp and walked to the hospital. Nothing suspicious was found in his car.
