Coast Guard Rescues Tuber Stuck In Mud Near Traverse City

ELBERTA, Mich. (AP) -- A 54-year-old man stranded in mud and thick brush along a western Michigan river while tubing has been rescued.

The U.S. Coast Guard says a crew from its Frankfort station heard the man call out as they searched early Sunday morning along the Betsie River shoreline in Elberta, southwest of Traverse City.

A woman told coast guard members late Saturday night that she had lost contact with the man. Searchers using night vision goggles and hand-held floodlights spotted the man about 1:30 a.m. Sunday on the river's opposite shore.

A Benzie County sheriff's office airboat crew was called in to bring the man to shore.
