Coast Guard Promotes Safe Boating, Urges Life Jacket Use

DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has kicked off National Safe Boating Week.

The annual observance runs through Friday and promotes safe and responsible boating.

Officials with the 9th Coast Guard District which covers Detroit and the Great Lakes are urging boaters to wear life jackets at all times while on the water.

The Coast Guard requires boats to have approved life jackets for each person onboard.

Coast Guard recreational boating safety specialist Mike Baron calls life jackets "the single-most important piece of survival equipment a boater can possess."
