Clinic Offers FREE Eye Screenings For Detroit Retirees

DETROIT (WWJ) - As Detroit struggles to recover from bankruptcy -- most of the city's retirees have lost city paid vision insurance and have changes in their health insurance.

In an effort to help during this transition period, The Coburn Kleinfeldt Eye Clinic in Madison Heights is offering FREE eye screenings to Detroit retirees on Thursday.

Dr. Donna Qahwash, an ophthamologist at Coburn Kleinfeldt, said retirees will be checked for eye disease, macular degeneration and cataracts.

"It's very important to identify these people who have diabetes or who have family history of glaucoma to either get them treated, get them identified and then treated, and those that are at risk be monitored so that they don't lose vision," Qahwash told WWJ's Chrystal Knight.

The free clinic runs Thursday, May 29 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. by appointment only. For more information, call 586-354-9190.
