Child Dies Following Flint-Area House Fire

SWARTZ CREEK (AP) - Authorities and family members say a 9-year-old boy has died following a Flint-area house fire.

Swartz Creek area fire Chief Brent Cole says the child died in the Monday fire in Swartz Creek, but he didn't release details about the victim.

Harold Coburn, who identified himself as the child's father, told The Flint Journal that Harold "Trey" Coburn died. The father arrived at the home minutes after firefighters, screaming "Where's my family?"

Family members and friends gathered with the father, holding him as he watched crews extinguish the fire.

Cole says firefighters tried to save the child and found a locked bedroom door that made it difficult to get to him. WNEM-TV reports the boy's step-mother was at home but couldn't get him out.

The cause is under investigation.
