Charlie Langton: Would People Pay More In Sales Tax To Fix Michigan Roads?

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) Should the Michigan sales tax be increased to pay for fixing Michigan roads?

Charlie Langton took to the streets to ask the public what they thought.

And many Michigan residents seemed to think it was a good idea.

"If you have a car, you don't want to kill the car with these potholes," one woman told Langton. "There are some potholes that you feel you could be lost inside of them. There was a pothole out here last year that I put a baby doll in because it was so deep.

"I had the baby doll's hands up in the air and I just watched people freak."

Gov. Rick Snyder is pushing the measure, and he says he has the support of more than 100 organizations–

What would Proposal 1 do? "It would amend the State Constitution to increase the sales/use tax from 6 percent to 7 percent to replace and supplement reduced revenue to the School Aid Fund and local units of government caused by the elimination of the sales/use tax on gasoline and diesel fuel for vehicles operating on public roads, and to give effect to laws that provide additional money for roads and other transportation purposes by increasing the gas tax and vehicle registration fees."

Wayne County's Warren Evans is the only local county executive to publicly endorse Proposal One. The governor says there are over one hundred groups in Michigan that are also supporting the proposal.

Snyder says doing nothing for the roads will only make the conditions worse.
