Carhartt Makes Detroit's Midtown Home For Flagship Store

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Carhartt, the company known for sturdy work coats and other clothing, has opened its flagship store in Detroit's Midtown area.

Company officials and city dignitaries gathered Thursday at the shop which is located in a once-vacant, three-story building that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is the 20th company-owned retail store for Dearborn-based Carhartt. The company has been making clothing in the U.S. for 125 years.

More than 100 patrons were on-hand for Thursday's opening.

"We were founded in Detroit by Hamilton Carhartt and he felt that this was the right place to establish a worker company that would serve the hardest workers in the nation," said Carhartt President and Chief Operating Officer Linda Hubbard.

Why the delay in coming back to the city?

She said the company "looked for a lot of years to really find the right space and figure out the right time to open a store in Detroit."

Midtown is one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the city.
