Car Crashes Through Hamtramck Flower Shop

HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) - Quite a scare and a lot of commotion — but no one was seriously hurt when a car came crashing through a Hamtramck flower shop Monday morning.

It happened shortly before 11 a.m. at "Flowers by Deb" on Caniff near Conant.

"When I was in the back I heard a big boom," owner Deb Shultz told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeill. "A gentleman plowed and hit the front of the building, knocked out all four windows, knocked out all the brickwork."

"It sounded like a bomb," she said.

Store employee Tyler Bowen was at work when it happened.

"Kinda a normal Monday morning...I'm cutting some flowers, and I hear a large, real loud crash," Bowen said. "I assumed something, maybe a planter or a vase fell off a shelf, or maybe one of the shelves broke — but I looked to the left corner of the store, and there was a white Lexus right through the window!"

Who was in the car?

"Two Polish fellas, just on a Monday morning drive,"  Bowen said. "They were kind of speechless; they seemed a little disoriented...and little bit, you know, like, 'Oh my God. What just happened?' They weren't really too chatty, but the police ended up showing up pretty quick."

EMS was called to the scene, but Bowen said both men in the car seemed to be uninjured. No one in the store was hurt.

Police are investigating whether the driver suffered a medical issue prior to the crash.
