1. You'd think a team losing the defending American League ERA champ, Anibal Sanchez, would be in trouble, but the Tigers' starting pitching is extraordinary. And it's not just because of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, who have won two of the last three AL Cy Young Awards. Rick Porcello and Drew Smyly have been just as effective. Because of their superior starting pitching, the Tigers are in every game.

2. The Tigers are much more balanced this season. Rajai Davis and Ian Kinsler not only steal bases, but they can take an extra base.

3. The Tigers are hitting with more power this season. Victor Martinez already has nine home runs. The Tigers are fourth in MLB in slugging percentage.
