Candidate Protesting Police Shootings Arrested At Royal Oak 'Police Run' Event

A Libertarian candidate for U.S. Congress in suburban Detroit was arrested during a community race after protesting and refusing to leave the roadway.

The Detroit Free Press report Brian Ellison was arrested Saturday during Royal Oak Police Department's Run with the Police. Ellison, running for the 8th District seat held by second-term Republican Rep. Mike Bishop, was protesting two recent fatal shootings by police.

Ellison was charged with two misdemeanors: interfering with a government operation and resisting arrest. He was released on bond and is expected to be arraigned later.

Royal Oak police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue says Ellison was told not to interfere with the race, but he intended "to disrupt the event." Ellison says his intention was to raise awareness about shootings by police.
