Candice Miller Says She Won't Run For Governor In 2022
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) — Candice Miller, a suburban Detroit official who has tackled environmental problems since leaving Congress, said Monday she won't run for governor in 2022.
Miller, a Republican, is a popular public works commissioner in Macomb County. Besides serving 14 years in Congress, she won two statewide races for secretary of state in the 1990s.
"I will not be a candidate for governor in 2022," Miller, 66, said on Facebook.
"Improving water quality in our magnificent Great Lakes, upgrading and maintaining our infrastructure and being a positive component of economic prosperity for Macomb County — these remain my focus," she said.
Miller's disclosure is significant because it takes someone from a large county with statewide name recognition off the list of potential challengers to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
