Canadian Kayaker Says He Crossed River To Urinate

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. immigration officials have arrested a Canadian kayaker who told them he landed on the Detroit River's Detroit shore because he was looking for a place to urinate.

Court documents show Jack Haddow Bishop later changed his story and said he was playing poker at the Motor City Casino. Records don't show his hometown.

Bishop was arrested June 9 near Old Fort Wayne and is jailed awaiting a June 25 arraignment for unlawful re-entry.

Records show Bishop was stopped at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel in 2006 and permanently barred from entering the U.S. He has a criminal record in Chatham and Windsor, Ontario, and is a registered sex offender.

The Associated Press left a phone message Monday seeking comment from his lawyer at the Detroit federal defender's office.
