Canadian Charged With Smuggling People Through Rail Tunnel

DETROIT (AP) — A Canadian man has been arrested and faces a federal charge of smuggling people into the U.S. illegally through an underground railway tunnel between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

Prosecutors say 53-year-old Juan Antonio Garcia-Jimenez, a naturalized Canadian resident from Guatemala, was arrested Wednesday by Border Patrol agents and made an initial appearance before a federal magistrate. A bond hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Prosecutors say a Garcia-Jimenez in March took a Mexican worker to the 1.6-mile tunnel and told him when to enter it to avoid cargo trains. The man was apprehended on the Detroit side. They say four other people apprehended leaving the temple in Detroit last month say they paid Garcia-Jimenez $1,500 each to be taken to the tunnel.

Online court records don't list an attorney for Garcia-Jimenez.
