Cabrera In First Place Among First Basemen In All-Star Voting

CBS DETROIT - Major League Baseball released an update Monday on the status of All-Star Game voting, and Miguel Cabrera currently leads all first basemen with 2,123,752 votes. The two-time MVP and Detroit Tigers star has a relatively slim lead over Eric Hosmer of the Kansas City Royals; Hosmer has 2,053,237 votes.

Cabrera has a batting average of .333 and an on-base percentage of .441, the best in the American League. He also has an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of 1.020, good for third-best in the league.

Five other Tigers are on the boards at their respective positions, though only shortstop Jose Iglesias is as close as second place. He has 1,277,655 votes.

Ian Kinsler is third among second basemen with 537,849 votes. Victor Martinez, who is currently on the disabled list, is fifth among designated hitters with 391,538 votes.

Yoenis Cespedes and J.D. Martinez currently rank sixth and 15th, respectively, among outfielders. Cespedes has 1,024,346 votes, and Martinez has 378,075 votes.

The Royals, who are three games ahead of Detroit in the American League Central Division standings, have a player in first place or second place in every category.

Hosmer is second among first basemen. Omar Infante - a former Tiger - is second among second basemen with 1,442,990 votes. Third baseman Mike Moustakas leads players at his position with 2,385,024 votes. Alcides Escobar leads shortstops with 2,269,046 votes.

Kansas City designated hitter Kendrys Morales is second with 1,827,730 votes, and Salvador Perez leads catchers with 2,681,063 votes - the most for any player at any position.

Three Royals outfielders are in the top five - Lorenzo Cain is in first place with 2,506,859 votes; Alex Gordon is in third with 1,917,834 votes; and Alex Rios is in fifth with 1,249,073 votes.

Player honors aside, both the Tigers and Royals have struggled a bit lately. The Tigers have lost four straight and are 3-7 in their last 10 games, and the Royals have lost four of their last five and are 5-5 in their last 10 games.
