Cabrera Compares 2014 Season To Fight With Mike Tyson

CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, a two-time MVP and Triple Crown winner who in 2014 battled bone spurs in his ankle and a stress fracture in his foot, compared the injury-plagued season to a fight with Mike Tyson.

"Playing with my ankle hurt, hitting 25 home runs, hitting over .300 and driving in 100 RBIs and scoring 100 runs, too, it was a special year for me," Cabrera told ESPN, "because when I finished last year, I feel kind of beat up, I feel like I fight with Mike Tyson."

Despite his health issues, Cabrera turned in a batting average of .313, smacked 25 home runs, drove in 109 runs and scored 101 runs. The numbers, which would represent a career year for most other hitters, showed how much the injuries hampered Cabrera, who had hit .348 with 44 homers the previous year.

Cabrera was named Player of the Month in September. In that span he recorded a batting average of .379, hit eight home runs and drove 18 runs in.

The Tigers have said they expect Cabrera, who had surgery in October, to be ready close to Opening Day.
