Cab Driver Killed On Detroit's West Side; Suspected Gunman In Custody

DETROIT (WWJ) - A cab driver was shot and killed on Detroit's west side overnight and police have the suspected gunman in custody.

Officers were on routine patrol around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 15700 block of Ardmore, in a neighborhood near Schaefer and Fenkell Avenue, when they observed a man quickly walk away from a Checker Cab, according to police.

As the officers approached man, he threw a handgun on the ground and started running. Officers followed the man and found him hiding in an abandoned house nearby. He was taken into custody without further incident.

While dealing with the suspect, the officers realized the yellow Checker Cab was still sitting in the street, immobile. After securing the suspect, the officers went over to the cab and found the driver, a 41-year-old man, unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police have not yet revealed a motive for the shooting.
