Cab Driver Charged In Hit-And-Run Crash With 9-Year-Old In Bike Lane

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 40-year-old cab driver is facing multiple charges after investigators say he fled the scene after striking a 9-year-old boy who was walking in a designated bike lane.

Mohammad Kamruzzaman, of Hamtramck, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of reckless driving causing serious impairment and leaving the scene of an
injury accident. Bond was set at $20,000.

Investigators say the accident happened around 7:30 a.m. on January 28 near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Alter Road, near the border of Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park.

As the light was turning green, Kamruzzaman allegedly turned his cab into a designated bike lane and hit a 9-year-old boy. After striking the child, investigators say Kamruzzaman fled from the scene.

The child sustained multiple injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said an investigation by Detroit police led to Kamruzzaman being identified as the suspect. He's due back in court for a preliminary examination on March 9.
