Building Under Renovation Along Telegraph Road Goes Up In Flames

BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Traffic backups are being reported on Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Township as firefighters battle a blaze at a former health club that is currently under renovation.

The fire broke out Thursday morning at the old Bally's Total Fitness, formerly Vic Tanny Health Club, on the northwest corner of Telegraph and Maple roads.

"The building is abandoned and they were doing some demo work because they're going to build another business in here," Fire Chief Dave Piché told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "Something maybe relative to the demolition might have cause the fire. We're not sure yet, that's under investigation."

Rick Bochenek, who owns Hogan's Restaurant next door, said he came into work around 6 a.m. and saw smoke coming from the building.

"I talked to one of the workers and they had a blow torch there yesterday, they're working on some of the demolition, and something must have caught on fire and it's been kind of burning all night," Bochenek told WWJ's Scott Ryan.

Several neighboring fire departments were called to the scene.

"At first it was a sizable fire but then we got it under control pretty quick," said Piché. "We called in mutual aid companies from other cities just to be safe."

No injuries were reported.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
