Broken Water Main Turns Rosa Parks Avenue Into 'Sheet Of Ice'

DETROIT (WWJ) - Officials have shut down a section of Rosa Parks Avenue in southwest Detroit after a broken water main turned the road into a "sheet of ice."

The water main break happened sometime Thursday morning on Rosa Parks Avenue just north of Bagley Avenue.

Crews battled single digit temperatures and wind chills well below zero as they quickly worked to clear the drains. But the water gathered on the road faster than the men could work and started to freeze, leaving a thick sheet of ice behind.

A city salt truck has been at the scene, but it doesn't seem to be helping much --  likely due to the frigid weather.

As a result of the ice, northbound Rosa Parks is closed at Bagley. The southbound lanes remain open.

It's not clear how long the road will remain closed.
